Welcome to the 16th Annual Canadian Investment Awards and Gala!
Fifteen years ago the Canadian Investment Awards and Gala was launched and changes
in the industry over time have been reflected in the evolution of the program.
Renamed twice from the original "Top Fund Awards" in 1994, to the "Canadian
Mutual Fund Awards" from 1995 – 2002, the "Canadian Investment Awards" now
recognize leading investment products and firms illustrating an enduring
commitment to excellence within the Canadian financial services industry
overall. |
| |
| It is the only time each year in Canada, that the industry, investors and
advisors come together to select top performers. The
event attracts over 650 guests annually and represents the year long
work of over 30 firms, 40 senior analysts and expert jury members researching
and ranking 50 categories and is supported by over 30 principal sponsors. |
| |
| The unusual nature of this collaborative structure provides an unbiased and
objective outcome that is completely unique to these awards and to Canada. No
other analysis process, nor any other resource, provides this broad industry
representation via "collaborative results" and the top performers have become a
valuable annual reference guide for Canadian investors and advisors. |
| |
| To be considered for a fund award,
investment funds and firms must meet stringent
eligibility criteria. The juries review performance with special
attention to three-year performance history, where applicable, to support a
longer-term perspective. Strict attention is paid to the quantitative
performance of a fund on an absolute basis, as well as various measures of risk
and the fund’s diversification benefits. But the focus is not just quantitative
alone. The juries also weigh qualitative factors such as management quality,
availability and fee structure. The analysts
are charged with reviewing multiple perspectives within a sound analytical
framework. These measures result in a broader range of issues being considered
so that the most deserving candidates are recognized. All of this requires long
hours of work by the Morningstar team to research the data and create eligible
fund lists for the analysts to use and as many hours of individual work for the
jury to review each category and select, in most cases, their top three picks.
Results go back to Morningstar to audit results and discuss with their team as
a whole at which time, a point system identifies the finalists and winner in
each category. |
| |
| The program now represents a broad range of
investment categories including mutual funds, income trusts, hedge
funds, pension funds, socially responsible funds, and outstanding individual
fund managers. |
| |
| The other awards are all chosen by separate juries with
individual criteria and processes depending on category. Several are
by submission only, some chosen by jury, others by advisors or
investors. Career achievement, person of influence, fund manager of the year,
technology, innovation, marketing, education, and community
investment categories are included here.
|
| |
| We are also proud to continue to support the extensive community investment
impact the financial services industry has had on our Country.
Imagine Canada recognizes excellence in community giving, and the leading
company is awarded for their contribution each year. As well, the YMCA’s Youth
Investment in Values Challenge, announces their winners at our event each year.
This is an exceptional educational initiative and our goal is to assist them in
building awareness so more firms will become involved. |

|
2004 marked the launch of the Canadian
Investment Guide – a 100 page glossy magazine based on the awards with
editorial provided by Investment Executive team to explain results, categories
and provide context to Canadian investors in the form of portfolio
implications. The magazine continues to be a Canadian bestseller with annual
distribution of 125,000 copies. |
| |
| None of this would be possible without the long term support of our two principal partners in
Morningstar Canada and CGI Inc., along with our three key media partners in Canadian Business, MoneySense
and Investment Executive; our silver sponsors, Fundata Canada Inc., Informco, and Learning Library Inc.,
and our strategic partners, Kaleidoscope Marketing and Communications Inc., Prestige Glass International Inc.,

| |
| Our goal is to continue to match industry and investor needs to assist in
navigating an ever increasing myriad of investment options. We are delighted
that we have been able to continue to improve and expand this awards program
